Out Now: Magnolia Pictures Releases 'Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg'
Our recommended film from our April newsletter is now available to watch. Magnolia Pictures’ Catching Fire chronicles the life of Anita Pallenberg, a German-American artist, actress, and model. Following her death in 2017, Pallenberg’s children unearthed a manuscript revealing decades of truth, joy, and heartache hidden from the world—and her family—during her lifetime.
Born in Rome in 1942, Pallenberg’s childhood was shaped by World War II; she wrote, “I didn’t learn how to walk—I ran.” After her whirlwind teenage years, Pallenberg, at 23, became a significant influence on The Rolling Stones. Although often reduced by the ‘60s press to Brian-then-Keith-then-Mick-then-Keith-again’s girlfriend, within creative circles, Pallenberg was recognized for much more. Her intellect, fearlessness, and joie de vivre overshadowed her famous partners in spades.
The sheer volume of archival footage throughout the film allows the viewer to step into the story in a much fuller way than many other documentaries are able to achieve. When a tumultuous cross-Atlantic journey with the band is described through Pallenberg’s eyes, there we see her, sullen and downcast on the ship’s deck. When she describes how she felt like Brian Jones’ “twin,” we are shown the pair falling in love in real time.
Voiced by Scarlett Johansson, Pallenberg’s narrative guides viewers through a life marked by brilliance and strife. That her story has been shared posthumously stands as her final triumph.
Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg is now available for rent or purchase via all major streaming platforms.
