San Francisco Gets Ready to Kick off 2023 with FOG Design+Art Fair
FOG Design+Art, which was cancelled in 2022, is back on next year from January 19-22 at Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture in San Francisco. The fair will open with a Preview Gala on Wednesday, January 18 benefitting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s (SFMOMA) education and exhibitions program. The fair will be co-chaired by philanthropists and collectors Komal Shah & Gaurav Garg.
FOG Design+Art brings together an international roster of leading contemporary design and art galleries, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the best of art and design from around the world all in one place. The 2023 fair will include 45 booths featuring 48 galleries from Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Milan, New York, and San Francisco, among others, with longtime participants and a selection of galleries exhibiting for the first time, including: Casemore Kirkeby (San Francisco), gió Marconi (Milan), Marc Selwyn Fine Art (Los Angeles), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), Nilufar Gallery (Milan), and Nonaka-Hill (Los Angeles).
Pioneering musician Linda Ronstadt will be honored at the Innovators Luncheon on Thursday, January 19, which was postponed in 2022. The event celebrates those who have made transformative contributions to their field. Ms. Ronstadt is one of the most versatile vocalists of the modern era, with a four-decade career of mastering endless genres of music; Rock and Roll, Country, Jazz, Light Opera, Big Band, Broadway, Mexican, and Afro-Cuban. Her rare talent has earned her a multitude of awards and honors including 12 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Lifetime achievement award, and 31 Gold and Platinum records with worldwide sales of over 50 million albums. She is the only performing artist in history to have had five consecutive number one albums. She was presented the National Medal of Arts by President Obama, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 2019.
“We are excited to present the 2023 edition of the fair, bringing together a suite of returning favorites and first-time exhibitors from around the world,” said steering committee member Douglas Durkin. “Each year our list of exhibitors somehow manages to top the year before. With carefully curated exhibitions and really thoughtful presentations of truly outstanding works for art and design, we couldn’t be more thrilled with this year’s presentation. FOG is such an important part of the cultural vitality of San Francisco, and we feel so honored to be able to bring such an outstanding fair to our city this year, and to anchor the always fantastic SF Art Week.”
In addition to the exhibitions on view, the fair will once again present FOG Talks, a programming series that explores ideas and issues relevant to the fields of art, design, technology, and our contemporary world, in the FOG Theater. The programs are all included free with fair admission.
Stanlee Gatti’s iconic installation 21POP will also return to the fair’s entryway. Themes the beloved installation has previously explored include San Francisco’s storied Arion Press, innovative furniture design by students from the California College of the Arts, and the many uses and forms of specific materials such as paper and cotton.
FOG Fair is overseen by a steering committee of San Franciscans with a deep commitment to the cultural fabric of the city: Douglas Durkin, Stanlee Gatti, Katie Paige, Sarah Wendell Sherrill, and Susan Swig. The fair was established in 2014 to create an international platform to champion art and design in the Bay Area.
Continuing FOG’s long-standing support of SFMOMA, the Preview Gala and Innovators Luncheon support the museum’s exhibitions and education programs, while FOG Forum specifically raises funds for its Architecture and Design department.
